For three days, Lieutenant Commander Sarah Chen had been chasing a radar blip that moved too fast for an island but too slow for a ship. The South China Sea was calm, the sky clear. Then she saw it-a lush, green island, gliding through the water like a ship.

"All hands, battle stations," she ordered.

The island stopped. A figure emerged from the jungle-a woman in a silver uniform, her face calm.

"I am Captain Elara of the Temporal Navy," she said. "This is not an island. It is a time vessel, disguised to avoid detection."

Sarah stared. "Why are you here?"

"There is a rift beneath the sea, a tear in time. Ships keep falling through-from the past, from the future. We are here to seal it."

"How can we help?"

Elara pointed to the water. "Your ship carries deep-sea sonar. If you map the rift's location, we can target it with our weapons."

Sarah hesitated. The crew was watching, their faces tense.

"Do it," she said.

The frigate deployed its sonar, mapping the ocean floor. The rift appeared-a glowing crack in the seabed, pulsing with energy.

"Target acquired," Sarah reported.

The island shimmered. A beam of light shot from its center, striking the rift. The crack sealed, the glow fading.

"Thank you," Elara said. "The rift is stable."

"What about the ships that fell through?" Sarah asked.

"They have returned to their proper times. Some to life, some to death. But all to peace."

The island glided away, disappearing into the mist.

Sarah never told anyone what she had seen. But on quiet nights, when the sea was calm, she looked at the horizon and wondered if Elara was still watching.

And she hoped that somewhere, in the space between times, the time vessel sailed on, protecting the past, the present, and the future.

The island never returned. But Sarah never stopped being grateful for the woman who had guided her home.
